INEOS Styrenics is to close Expandable Polystyrene plant at its Marl facility at the end of 2013

INEOS remains committed to its Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) business.
INEOS has today announced its intention to close production of Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) at its Marl site in Germany, at the end of Q4 2013.
Discussions will now begin with employees and the Works Council to find alternative roles for the 65 people affected by this decision.
Expandable Polystyrene is mainly used in the insulation of buildings. As the European construction sector has suffered from adverse economic conditions, demand for EPS products has reduced.
Operating costs of the EPS plant have also been affected by the recent closure of the styrene monomer and polystyrene units at Marl. The loss of the styrene monomer and polystyrene units removed a number of operating synergies at the Marl site which left the EPS unit with an unsustainable fixed cost base and a weaker styrene monomer supply position.
The decision to close the Marl EPS plant follows a full and detailed review of the EPS business, which has highlighted the need for INEOS Styrenics to optimise its production capacity across its three remaining facilities. This will improve the cost efficiency of its business, as it continues to meet its customer needs in a highly competitive European market.
INEOS Styrenics remains committed to our EPS business. Following the closure of the Marl unit, it will continue to be one of the largest producers of EPS in Europe with 350 ktpa total capacity. From the end of the year it will supply high quality EPS products from production sites in Breda (The Netherlands), Ribecourt (France) and Wingles (France).

INEOS bleibt weiterhin im EPS-Geschäft tätig.
INEOS hat heute die Absicht angekündigt, die Produktion von expandierbarem Polystyrol (EPS) am Marler Standort in Deutschland zum Ende es vierten Quartals 2013 einzustellen.
Gespräche mit den Beschäftigten und dem Betriebsrat werden nun unmittelbar aufgenommen, um alternative Stellen für die ca. 65 von dieser Entscheidung betroffenen Beschäftigten zu finden.
EPS wird im Wesentlichen für Dämmmaterial in Gebäuden eingesetzt. Da der europäische Baumarkt unter sehr schlechten Marktbedingungen leidet, ist die Nachfrage nach EPS stark gesunken. Die Betriebskosten zur Herstellung von EPS sind durch die kürzliche Schließung der Polystyrol- und Styrolmonomeranlagen zudem gestiegen. Durch die Schließung der beiden Anlagen sind Synergien verloren gegangen. Die Rohstoffkosten sind hoch, und die Ertragssituation der EPS-Anlage ist so schwach, dass keine Nachhaltigkeit gegeben ist.
Der Entscheidung, die EPS-Anlage in Marl zu schließen, ging eine umfassende und detaillierte Untersuchung voraus, die deutlich herausgestellt hat, dass INEOS Styrenics die Produktions-kapazitäten in den verbleibenden drei Standorten optimieren muss. Die Schließung wird die Kosteneffizienz des EPS-Geschäfts verbessern, um weiterhin die Anforderungen der Kunden in einem sehr umkämpften europaweiten Markt zu erfüllen.
INEOS Styrenics bleibt weiterhin im EPS-Geschäft tätig. Auch nach der Schließung der EPS-Anlage in Marl wird INEOS Styrenics einer der größten Produzenten von EPS in Europa mit ca. 350.000 Tonnen Kapazität bleiben. Ab Ende des Jahres 2013 wird die Lieferung von hoch qualitativem EPS aus den Standorten Breda in den Niederlanden sowie Ribécourt und Wingles in Frankreich erfolgen.
