150.000 ton of CO2 captured for re-use at INEOS Oxide Antwerp

BECO2, a joint venture between Messer and IJsfabriek Strombeek commissioned its CO2 liquefaction unit on the INEOS Oxide Zwijndrecht site

BECO2, a joint venture between Messer and IJsfabriek Strombeek commissioned its CO2 liquefaction unit on the INEOS Oxide Zwijndrecht site. Around 150.000 ton of CO2 (or the equivalent of removing 60.000 cars from the road) which is produced as by-product of the Ethylene Oxide process will be captured, purified, liquefied, sold and re-used.

Messer will use two thirds of the plant’s capacity in order to supply carbonic acid, dry ice or gaseous and liquid carbon dioxide to its customers in the food and beverage sector as well as the manufacturing and water industries, among others. The remaining third will be bought by IJsfabriek Strombeek.

Hans Casier, CEO INEOS Oxide commented: "With BECO2 we welcome the 13th Third Party on our site. Beside the typical close co-operation and benefits of sharing costs and infrastructure, this is a very important next step as it will further improve the most energy and CO2 efficient Ethylene Oxide unit in Europe".
