    Our environment is constantly changing. Global population is rising at an unprecedented rate. There is growing pressure on resources. Rising energy prices and climate change have created a need for new lower carbon energy sources.

    All of this is driving the transition towards a resource and energy efficient society, and the chemical industry has a central role to play in enabling this shift.

    Chemicals are the building blocks of our modern world. They are essential components in many of the products we use today and in the technologies that will drive us towards a more sustainable future.

    Sustainability and the petrochemical industry are not necessarily antagonistic. At INEOS, sustainability is fundamental to how we do business. It is a key driver of innovation.

    At the heart of the INEOS approach is our commitment to the principles of responsible care. These are central to the INEOS way of working and are put into practice every day across our business.

    As a global chemicals business, we have an important role to play to help address the challenges that industry is facing. Through the different policies, quality and energy management systems and audits that are part of our approach to doing business, we seek to excel at what we do and take the greatest of care how we do it.

    Our quality, environmental and energy management systems conform to ISO International Standards, which  guarantee the safe, reliable and efficient aspect of our activities around the world and ensure continual improvement of those management systems to further enhance our performance.

    As an active member and partner of industry councils, platforms and associations, such as Cefic, SusChem and SPIRE, INEOS contributes to the many ambitious targets set out for our industry in terms of energy efficiency, safety, emission reductions, and innovation.

    INEOS is a signatory of the International Council of Chemical Associations Responsible Care® Global Charter, which is part of our commitment to strengthening chemicals management systems, safeguarding people and the environment, and to engaging to work toward sustainable solutions.

    Responsible Care® is considered as a means through which the chemical industry will contribute to sustainable development. By following the guidelines and measures of Responsible Care® we commit to safely conduct our business in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner, to utilise our capabilities responsibly and provide the foundation for development and capital investments resulting in a steadily improving safety, health and environmental performance.

    Sustainability is core to our businness. At INEOS we pride ourselves on being entrepreneurial and forward thinking. Ours is a sector that can have enormous influence on what the world does now, on the way it progresses in the future and on how to do this sustainably. We see sustainability as a key driver of innovation. Looking for new products and new ways of doing things that overcome the technical challenges of sustainability keeps our business one step ahead.

    Many of our products and processes are cutting edge technologies, and our approach to business is setting new trends as we join forces with business partners to form industrial clusters (See Here). Our Antwerp, Köln, Stenungsund and Lavéra sites are great examples of how we share resources and utilities with local third parties. We create industrial symbiosis, contributing to the very heart of corporate sustainability and to the resource and energy efficiency targets.

    We focus our innovations from the insights we get from our customers and other stakeholders. To that end, we are building partnerships with our customers and other stakeholders to provide innovative solutions to complex and challenging issues.

    But at INEOS, the way we see sustainability within our industry does not stop at resource and energy efficient production. Our business encompasses the social aspects of sustainable development. For each improvement that we bring to our sites, processes, products or management systems, we recognise the benefits that they bring to the society and how they provide for an overall increased quality of life around our sites and across the value chain. INEOS products make a significant contribution to saving life, improving health and enhancing standards of living for people around the world.

  • A Business Example: Styrolution – Providing The Best Solutions For All Industries

    Founded in 2011 as a 50-50 joint venture between two of the world’s leading chemical companies, BASF and INEOS, Styrolution is now a wholly owned INEOS business and a leading global styrenics supplier. The company provides innovative materials for many everyday products across a broad range of industries, including automotive, electronics, household, construction, healthcare, toys, sports, leisure, and packaging.

    Its mission puts sustainability at the top of the priorities to reach higher growth with world-class production facilities.

    INEOS Styrolution operates with integrity and with ethical standards and adopts a progressive approach towards sustainability. A Supplier Code of Conduct extends its compliance with environmental, health or safety standards and fair business practices up the supply chain. Its ongoing commitment is reflected in its compliance with ISO standards, the publication of its e-book on sustainability and its first GRI 4-based report which has been published in 2016.

  • A Business Example: Inovyn – Providing Effective and Efficient Practices

    Formed as a 50-50 joint venture between the international chemical groups Solvay and INEOS, Inovyn, now solely owned by INEOS, is one of the top PVC producers in the word, producing a wide range of chemicals that are used as raw materials in many industrial process.

    Organic Chlorine Derivatives, Chlor Alkali, General Purpose Vinyls and Specialty Vinyls, Inovyn’s key products and processes provide great examples of effective and efficient sustainable development practices and improvements built on existing technologies. Through its products the company strongly contributes to reducing the environmental impact and improving the safety of many everyday items such as efficient tyres, safe drinking water, safely packaged food, disease free agricultural crops.

  • A Project Example: EPOS – Cross-Sectorial Industrial Symbiosis

    Within the framework of the European Research and Innovation program Horizon 2020, funds are granted to projects that help mitigate climate change and improve energy efficiency. The approach connects sectors and brings them to work together along the value chain through cross-sectorial collaboration that can be seen as an innovative form of Industrial Symbiosis.

    By participating in the EPOS Project which came out of the SPIRE community, INEOS is creating added value in process efficiency. Due to the variety of companies and sectors, INEOS also benefits from cross-fertilisation of learning and expertise across the EPOS partnership.

    EPOS is a project with the ambition of making businesses and operations more efficient, more cost-effective, more competitive and more sustainable across process sectors. Synergies between industries can be created sharing best practices and with it, overall improvements in efficiency can be reached.

Sustainable Products

  • Sustainable Products

    The contribution that our industry can bring to reducing carbon emissions is significant. At INEOS we take on the challenges of emissions reductions by making products that positively impact carbon efficiency and lead to CO2 savings.

    Our industry is energy and carbon-intensive, but it is highly efficient. The products we produce and supply to other industries and society enable significant resource and energy savings; and as a consequence reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. For every tonne of CO2 emitted during production, chemical products save two tonnes of CO2 during use.

    Areas where most savings are made are transportation, heating, construction, packaging, consumer goods, power and lighting. Our products also provide the raw materials for renewable energy technology, including wind turbines and solar panels

    Many examples of sustainable products can be mentioned, whether it is insulation materials used in the construction industry and for housing, lightweight materials for lower fuel consumption in the automotive industry, or lighter and more easily recyclable plastics for food packaging as well as lightweight and durable piping.

    To tackle climate change related issues INEOS has a very integrated and proactive approach, especially concerning carbon and energy matters. The pan-INEOS Carbon and Energy Network (CEN) operates across all INEOS businesses and sites, enabling them to work in concert. The Network captures expertise, it shares best practice and understanding of future legislative and policy developments at all levels across our businesses.

  • Carbon Fibre: A New Material For A Low Carbon World

    Carbon fibre is a vital component in an increasing number of products. Lightweight and incredibly strong, it is now the material of choice for wind turbine blades and a new generation of highly-efficient planes and cars. When used in the manufacture of aircraft, fuel efficiency can be improved by as much as 30% without compromising safety.

    As the world’s number one supplier of acrylonitrile – the main component in carbon fibre – INEOS is at the forefront of this revolution. More than 90% of the world’s acrylonitrile production capacity is based on our technology, and manufacturers of the latest carbon fibre passenger planes and aircraft components rely on our products every day.

    Not only does carbon fibre result in lower fuel costs and lower emissions, it also makes the body of the plane stronger, meaning windows can be larger and internal air pressure can be kept at more normalised levels, which all contribute to improving the experience of air travel.

    In the automotive industry, car manufacturers are currently developing the technologies that will allow carbon fibre to be used on a large scale to produce more lightweight, fuel-efficient cars. The potential environmental benefit is enormous, given the number of cars in use around the world today. 

  • Lighter, More Recyclable Plastics

    Plastics are a valuable commodity, they account for 4% of the global consumption of oil and gas. INEOS is working to get ‘more for less’, to decrease the amount of oil, gas and other raw materials used in their production.

    Our R&D efforts include a broad range of projects focused on improving process efficiency at our production plants and developing new, more sustainable products for our customers. The thinking is simple: if plastics are stronger and lighter, they require fewer raw materials to make and use less energy in transportation. They are often easier to recycle.

    INEOS Olefins & Polymers is focused on reducing the weight of high value plastics, while maintaining their strength, rigidity and durability. For example, our lightweight, durable piping, which is used in distribution networks for water and gas, is corrosion free and can last up to 100 years - significantly longer than steel.

    It is also more reliable, easier to install and leaks less. Our PERT (polyethylene resistant to temperature) piping is being used to provide a simple, low cost hot water piping system for thousands of homes around the globe.

    We are also improving the efficiency of plastics production by developing high-rigidity packaging that can be moulded using up to 20% less energy over a shorter life cycle. This means that the same number of injection moulding machines can produce 20% more product, whether that’s a car fuel tank or the packaging used to extend the shelf life of food products.

    We often work in partnership with our customers to develop new solutions. For example, we worked with well-known soft drinks producers to help reduce the weight of the caps on bottles by around 25%, which is a direct saving on raw materials and waste and makes the bottles lighter to transport.

  • Resysta® A natural fiber compound

    The Compounds unit of our INEOS Enterprises business provides an innovative and sustainable solution to our customers with Resysta® Compounds, a brand new PVC-based product in the market. It is a weather and water resistant material made from renewable raw material, which shows exceptional eco-balance and is 100% recyclable. Resysta® is a material that sets new standards in terms of sustainability with a reliability over 15 years, minimal maintenance and that is processable like wood. In time, this is the kind of innovation that will help move towards reducing the use of rainforests.

  • Technology Enhancing Processes

    INEOS gives high priority to manufacturing processes optimisation and efficiency.

    Examples of innovation successes to date include our patented process for the production of acrylonitrile, which is essential for the worlds carbon fibre, our proprietary membrane cell technology for the production of chlorine, our co-investment in combined heat and power (CHP) production at our major manufacturing sites, and our initiatives to create sustainable PVC.

    Through actions such as energy efficiency projects, process integration, business clusters (Antwerp, Köln, Lavéra and Stenungsund) and new developments in cleaner technologies such as clean catalysts, we create the right environment for innovation.

    Our Research and Technology centres in various locations around the world are key to the development of our technology and process innovations. Not only are these new solutions essential within our own activities but by working with our customers and providing technical service at a process and product level, we ensure that new developments are implemented safely, to the full extent of their capacity.

  • The Future of Logistics

    Transportation is a major user of energy and producer of carbon emissions. Our supply chain logistics know that the most environmentally friendly mode of transport is nearly always also the most cost effective. Furthermore, the most carbon efficient mode of transport for us also reduces risks from a health and safety perspective. At INEOS we focus on driving down both the cost and the environmental impact of transportation, while maintaining our high quality and safety standards.

    The most efficient means of transporting commodity chemicals is to avoid transportation in the first place. Where we can, INEOS will negotiate product “swaps” with other production units of the same commodity closer to a customer to avoid transportation altogether. This can be between our own sites or other suppliers. If this is not possible the next best option is via a pipeline.

    Our businesses generally encourage customers to co-locate on the same industrial site or at locations that are connected. This approach means that we can deliver product directly via pipeline. Our next preferred option is to use a ship or barge, then rail and finally road. As part of our work with our transport providers we also strongly advocate training for drivers on fuel-efficient driving.

    Cross-business supply chain network

    Through our cross-business supply chain network, managers meet regularly to share best practice including how to make the most of low carbon logistics. In addition, all our suppliers are required, through our contractual arrangement with them, to be most efficient in providing a service on our behalf. With large tenders we aim to leverage the size of the contract to drive further fuel and cost efficiencies. This mindset together with efficient transport planning helps us to maintain safety, drive cost down and improve carbon savings across our supply chain.

  • Reducing Energy Consumption

    Saving energy has always been a fundamental part of how we operate at INEOS because it makes good business sense. Climate change considerations and legislation in some of our operating countries mean we are also committed to meeting strict targets for CO2 emissions. Our strategy is to first reduce our own energy use as much as possible and then to use the lowest carbon sources of energy that we can.

    This approach is illustrated at our Runcorn site in the north of England. By investing in infrastructure and new process technology, the Runcorn plant has been optimised to run in the most energy efficient way possible. Initiatives implemented over the last few years include the installation of high-efficiency motors, as well as energy meters that allow managers to have instant access to real-time data on energy use. We also installed a new steam plant and invested in a new centralised control room and cross-site process automation system. Overall, these changes have led to energy savings in the last ten years of nearly 18% and annual CO2 savings of around 250,000 tonnes per year.

    We have invested more than £400 million in new chlorine cellrooms at Runcorn, which use the latest membrane technology. This technology removes the need for mercury in the process and delivers primary energy savings compared to the older mercury cell technology.

    Having reduced energy consumption at our Runcorn site, we have built what will be the largest energy from waste Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in the UK. This new plant will use Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) from municipal waste.

    Strategically located near to Liverpool, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, the Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power plant provides efficient energy provision for those located nearby.

    With a total capacity to treat 750 ktpa of solid recovered fuel and to produce 83 MW of electricity and 51.2 MW of heat by steam export per year the benefits derived from the plant are huge.

    The facility supplies the neighbouring INEOS chemicals manufacturing facility with up to 20% of its total energy needs. It allows users to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, therefore replacing substantial amounts of it. It helps divert more than 75% of Greater Manchester’s waste from landfill. It presents a more sustainable way of waste disposal than landfills, which produce and emit a lot of GHG. With a well-regulated flue gas treatment system, emissions do not pose a threat to public health and the environment.

Safety, Health and Environment are of the highest priority at INEOS. Ensuring the highest levels of health and safety is the duty of everyone across the company, wherever they work. It is a responsibility that we take extremely seriously.

    It is the responsibility of everyone at INEOS to ensure the highest standards of health and safety in everything that we do. Our commitment to safety starts at the top, with the Executive Board of each INEOS business being responsible for safety performance. All employees and contractors receive extensive safety training, participate in safety teams, contribute to incident learning, and suggest ongoing improvements in safety standards and procedures.

    The INEOS safety principles define what is expected of all our employees, contractors and businesses on a day-to-day basis. Each INEOS business is measured on its adherence to the principles and on its performance against specific safety targets.

    Safety performance is also linked to our employee bonus scheme, which further helps to embed a safety culture. We focus our attention on safety in both the processes we apply and the behaviour we expect.

    Systems and operational procedures have safety built in to ensure the plant and equipment is being operated properly.

    Any changes in processes or procedures are subject to a risk assessment and, if necessary, a hazard study to analyse any potential safety risks or impacts. We have strict emergency procedures and if required, a plant can be shut down completely until an issue is fully resolved.

    Everyone has responsibility for ensuring a safe working environment for themselves and their co-workers and speaking up about safety issues is encouraged. We also support near miss reporting so that we can learn from these, and put in place corrective action to ensure that incidents can be avoided.

    The success of our business depends on ensuring a safe environment for our staff and the wider community around each of our sites, which is why safety is our highest priority.

    Excellence in Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) performance is a top priority for INEOS. We aim to meet or exceed all legislative requirements in these areas. We set annual performance targets and are committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations.

    At INEOS we create a culture that reinforces our SHE performance. We aim to minimise the impact our facilities have on local environments and especially our neighbours. This means working in close partnership with community groups and key stakeholders to ensure that we are a responsible neighbour and partner.

    Efficiency is absolutely central to our business. As a producer of commodity chemicals the efficiency of our processes has a significant impact on our profitability. We have a clear focus on reducing energy and material inputs and a clear priority to minimise waste. This means that we can minimise costs as well as reduce environmental impacts.

    Our approach to safety is equally rigorous and is focused on three key areas, which cover activities both inside and outside our facilities:

    • Process safety, which involves continual safety improvements to existing manufacturing processes, as well as designing new processes
    • Behavioural / human factor safety, instilling a safety culture among all our employees to ensure INEOS is a safe place to work
    • Product safety, ensuring that INEOS products are used, handled, stored and disposed of responsibly by our customers
  • INEOS Group Safety Performance

    Within any of our activities from plant construction to process operation, risk is a known factor that can be managed.

    To achieve our objective of “zero injuries”, INEOS requires all employees and contractors who work under our control to adhere and contribute to the ongoing development of our strict safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.

    By making safety, health and the environment an integral part of our business we encourage a culture of continuous improvement across all activities in all locations.

  • Customers and Product Stewardship

    All chemicals should be handled responsibly. INEOS works with our customers to ensure that they have the information, procedures and facilities to receive, store, and use our products safely.

    The European Union regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) ensures that companies like INEOS manage the risk associated with their products and provide customers with the information they need to handle them safely. INEOS’ commitment to the principles of responsible care means that we often go far beyond REACH in the stewardship we apply to our products.

    INEOS Nitriles is a good example. The business carries out a comprehensive technical and safety audit of each potential customer before deliveries commence. This check ensures that equipment, safety protocols and procedures meet our stringent standards and we work together to be sure deliveries can be received, stored and handled safely.

    Once businesses become customers, we continue to run regular safety checks. Our Safe Handling Guides and training videos help customers maintain the highest safety standards and our specialist technical teams are on hand to offer advice and support.

    To ensure safe transport of our products, all Nitriles customers must use approved logistics service providers. We also audit safety standards at all of the major transport hubs that our products pass through, such as ports, terminals and warehouses.

    INEOS Nitriles also holds Product Stewardship Conferences, in the US and in Europe, bringing customers together to review the latest developments in safety. These conferences are done at the request of sales representative from any country and then gathers all involved delegates. During such events, customers can also be invited to take a tour of the nearby INEOS facility to see safety work in action therefore, adding real value to our ongoing partnership with them.

  • Building The Best Workforce

    We work hard to ensure that INEOS is a rewarding place to work. We encourage an entrepreneurial culture where talent can quickly rise to the top and where people are rewarded for taking the initiative, as well as for high performance. Fresh thinking and new ways of doing things are critical to our ongoing success and are key to innovation across sustainable products and processes.

    Many of our employees have joined INEOS from companies such as BASF, Bayer, BP, Dow, Enichem, Hoechst, ICI and Solvay. We are a relatively new company built on a rich heritage.

    We continue to invest in our people when they join INEOS, building on the extensive industry experience they bring with them from elsewhere.

    As we grow our company organically we have developed new training programmes which include our modern apprenticeship schemes and ongoing training for our technicians, engineers, executives and leadership teams.

    We aim to attract and develop talented employees to drive our business forward and meet the changing needs of society and our customers.

    As a private company we also pride ourselves on being a lean organisation and we avoid bureaucracy. Our flat organisational structure has minimum hierarchy, which helps our overall efficiency and ensures there is plenty of scope for those who want to step up and take the initiative. It also helps us to adapt quickly, something that is particularly helpful when markets change and we need to be faster to react than our competitors. It also helps to put INEOS at the forefront of thought leadership in manufacturing and process technology development.

    We recruit and invest in the best people to fit with our culture. A good example is the INEOS Olefins and Polymers (O&P) Leadership Development Programmes which provide further support for our talented staff, developing the skills they will require to drive our business and deliver great service to our customers. Key elements of the programme are our Safety, Health and Environment considerations, embedded within the principles of Responsible Care. These are fundamental to everything we do and guide our performance targets at every level of the business.

  • Inspiring The Next Generation

    Many of our sites work with their communities to raise awareness of the value of science and technology to everyday life.

    A good example of this takes place in Germany where the TuWas! programme has been inspiring young student, girls and boys from age 6 to 12, since 2008.

    Through our investment and financial support in the programme, we are able to contribute to consolidating inquiry-based science education in Germany. Indeed, it is proven that learning through guided experiments and discussions as well as activities allows students to be more actively included in what they learn and more stimulated and gain more interest.

    With this project, we are also able to bring together important stakeholders such as industry, school authorities, governments, etc. around the important matter that is education of the future workforce of our society.

    INEOS has also supported the very best in chemistry. Through the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) we have contributed to the funding of the UK Chemicals Olympiad. A panicle competition that challenges the very brightest minds from around the world. As a result of our involvement with the RSC we have been able to double the amount of schools that are made aware of the programme or get involved. With a particular emphasis on getting state schools involved.

    We believe it is important to have a scientifically-literate society. Through these programmes we are working to increase knowledge and interest of science in schools. We recognise that the young people we work with may become the next generation of INEOS employees, our suppliers or customers or neighbours.

  • Investing In Skills For The Future

    A highly skilled workforce is vital for the long-term sustainability of our Company. INEOS invests in bespoke training programmes that combine practical experience alongside academic study, which is providing exceptional Graduate engineers.

    Cooperation between INEOS businesses and local universities presents a twofold win, especially in areas such as energy integration with focus on cutting costs and carbon. First we bring expertise and tools from the academic world into our INEOS sites, which encourages creative thinking and innovative solutions; and likewise we invest in young graduates, via Master or PhD theses, thus generating a pool of potential new workforce for our INEOS businesses.

    These programmes are extremely well regarded. As such, in the case of our Köln site, they attract on average around 3,000 applications per annum for ca. 60 places that are available.

    Since 2012, we have been supporting “Innogrants”, first via École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), then through the Fondation pour l'Innovation Technologique (FIT) programme in Vaud, Switzerland. With this support, we intend to encourage innovation and entrepreneurial culture, which we deeply value. FIT has seen around 250 projects in different fields of technology emerge since 1994, representing around 900 jobs created in Switzerland. We are proud to be able to contribute to developments in clean energy and green chemistry through this ongoing programme.

    INEOS aims to be a good and valued neighbour and strives to maintain the trust of communities living and working close to our sites. This underpins our license to operate. Each of our sites has a coordinated approach to building and strengthening their relationships with their local stakeholders.

    We are committed to the long-term sustainability of our operations and in supporting the communities around our sites. This manifests itself in a variety of ways from staff volunteering to support of worthy causes, local sponsorship and regular communications.

    We work alongside schools and colleges in promoting science, technology and engineering. Bringing relevance to the school curriculum with either visits to our sites or ‘employees in the classroom’, we support and enhance the delivery of learning in schools. Meeting and working alongside our employees provides inspiration to the next generation of scientists and engineers.

    We also look for ways to collaborate with neighbouring companies in Belgium, Lavéra (France), Grangemouth (UK) or Norway for example, we have developed strong industrial clusters. These bring together local businesses to share resources, infrastructure and utility services. These clusters also work together to organise community events such as the series of open days that took place in 2011 to promote the International Year of Chemistry.

  • Open Communications With Our Neighbours

    We believe that regular, clear communications about our operations helps build trust with our neighbours. It is a demonstration of our commitment to the principles of Responsible Care.

    We use different methods across our sites and facilities to share information with our neighbours depending on the needs of each community. Our local community groups share information about the work we do, our track record and local topics of interest. Each site applies a local approach. Some of our sites use electronic updates to let the community know about any changes that may be happening on site, for example work that might generate noise or local disruption, economic health of the facility, site safety and environmental performance updates, plant business or community related news, etc.

    On the rare occasion that we have incidents at our sites we work hard get an information out to the community as quickly as possible.

    In some locations like in Addyston, Ohio INEOS Styrolution business has a public advisory group which provides a forum for open and candid dialogue on topics of interest to the community and plant employees, including but not limited to environmental, health and safety issues and the economic health of the Addyston facility.

    We also host community forum meetings like the ones we have organised in Runcorn and in Grangemouth. These forums involve local residents, community groups and stakeholders. They enable us to provide updates, to the public about our sites and businesses introducing plans for the future. Importantly they provide a platform for local people that live and work close to our sites to directly ask us questions. In addition, we sometimes hold open house days during which local people can come and tour our sites to see for themselves how we operate.

  • Local Partnerships

    In our effort to do sustainable business we continuously push further and also join forces with other neighbouring sectors and local organisations. This allows us to foster cross-sector collaboration which creates benefit across all three pillars of sustainability and which can be shared between partners.

    When businesses form clusters, we don't only aim at creating economies of scale, it is also a major incentive to make efficient use of resources. By collaborating, resources and materials, infrastructure and services, even utility supplies can be shared. Several INEOS sites co-host cogeneration plants that supply the onsite heat and power needs and operate cost effectively and energy efficiently. By sharing products and utilities, we optimise the use and values of resources, minimise chemical flows and reduce energy use.

    We want to tackle the current emerging debate on how to bring benefits to the economy, make it more sustainable and competitive. Thanks to our many initiatives in all aspects of our activities we are contributing to the circular economy and continuously providing solutions to move forward in the right direction.

  • The Daily Mile

    The Daily Mile is a simple but groundbreaking initiative, encouraging primary schools and nurseries to take children outside running for just 15 minutes each day. The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, emotional and social health and well-being of children in the UK and around the world – regardless of age or personal circumstances- and create healthy habits for life. It is a simple and effective programme that any school can implement for free, and its impact can be transformational - improving not only the children’s fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behaviour and general well-being.

    The Daily Mile Foundation is a charity, established by Elaine Wyllie, the Pride of Britain Award winning former head teacher of St Ninians School in Scotland where The Daily Mile first began.Elaine wants every child to have the opportunity to run or walk a mile each day, and has seen the initiative work in the long term in a wide variety of schools. Supported by INEOS, she is now working with a small team to build a Daily Mile community in the UK and beyond, with schools, local councils, sports bodies and other charities.

    INEOS is backing The Daily Mile campaign due to its passionate belief in the importance of getting children active and healthy from a young age. It also supports this cause through its own children’s running initiative, GO Run for Fun (link to GRFF page), which organises 2 km fun runs free to schoolchildren across the globe.

    The Daily Mile is successful because it is simple and free:

    • It takes place over just 15 minutes, with children averaging a mile each day.
    • Children run outside in the fresh air – and the weather is a benefit, not a barrier.
    • There’s no set up, tidy up, or equipment required.
    • Children run in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.
    • It’s social, non-competitive and fun.
    • It’s fully inclusive; every child, whatever their circumstances, age or ability, succeeds at The Daily Mile.
    • Schools build The Daily Mile into their day in the way that best suits, and can link it to the curriculum.

  • GO Run for Fun

    GO Run for Fun is an international childrens fitness campaign, designed to inspire children to be more active through fun short-distance running events. It has been a phenomenal success with over 170,000 children taking part since it was launched three years ago.

    The GO Run for Fun programme has a very simple aim - to get as many kids between the age of 5 and 10 running as possible, through well organised events. Whether it is 1 km or 1 mile doesn’t matter. Since GO Run for Fun kicked off in Summer 2013, we have seen young runners take part in events spanning the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, France and Houston, USA - and the number of events is still growing!

    From its inception, The Go Run for Fun Foundation has been supported by INEOS and its founder, Jim Ratcliffe, driven by a personal belief that promoting the health and well-being of young people is a critical responsibility for INEOS and our wider society.
