This latest investment forms part of the wider ongoing investment strategy to secure the future of the site as a strategic chemical manufacturing complex at the heart of the European chemicals cluster.

Rob Ingram, CEO of INEOS Olefins and Polymers North, says: “We have already invested in major upgrades of our crackers at Cologne; significant upgrades of the site infrastructure is underway; and we are now developing plans for a new cell-room, and for a series of investments in new derivative assets across the site.  This new investment will secure the long-term future of the Cologne site and support our derivatives and polymer businesses in Europe.”

INEOS in Cologne is the largest chemical company and the third largest industrial employer in Cologne. With 2,200 employees in six divisions, INEOS is one of the largest locations for the INEOS Group.

As a petrochemical site, INEOS in Cologne is an important supplier of raw materials to the chemical industry. These raw materials are the basic building blocks for the production of performance polymers, rubber and fibres. In addition, they are used in solvents and detergents, paints, fertilizers and pesticides as well as in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

INEOS in Cologne was founded in 1957 as a joint venture between BP and Bayer as EC Erdölchemie. In 2001, the plant became a 100 per cent BP company. Since 16 December 2005 INEOS has been the owner and operator of the site.
