Louise MacNicol, Laboratory Commercial and Development Team Leader, explains, “Grangemouth has one of the biggest and most advanced analytical chemistry labs in Scotland. We provide 24/7 real-time monitoring and analytical service supporting improved operating processes, resulting in higher productivity, improved quality, and reducing emissions. Our data is used to ensure the all-important safety of our daily operations.”

We are currently working with innovative business pioneers Levenseat Renewable Energy to deliver a range of analyses for their state-of-the-art operations - manufacturing agricultural supplements such as compost and bio-digester feeds, environmentally friendly building blocks for construction and generating renewable energy from domestic and business waste products.

Levenseat were attracted by INEOS Lab’s ISO accreditation (ISO/IEC 17025) and its team of highly qualified, experienced, and friendly development chemists and technicians. Our track record of devising bespoke analytical processes that meet diverse customer needs, will support their operations be as energy and emissions efficient as possible.

INEOS were attracted to Levenseat because of their clear ethos and waste hierarchy that puts Planet and People first;
            (1) Front End Recovery
                        (2) Recyclates for Remanufacture
                                     (3) Refuse Derived Fuel for energy.

Levenseat’s values and operating principles mirror those of INEOS in terms of design engineering and a whole end-to-end view on how to structure an environmentally and economically sound facility built around integrated energy efficient operations.

grangemouth-lab.jpgLouise continues, “We are seeing a trend in customers enquiring about our testing capabilities which are ISO 17025 accredited. These requests are specifically coming from companies who operate ‘upgrading plants’ with processes that renew or repurpose waste products that then diverts them away from landfill.”

In this specific case, the INEOS laboratory will analyse a range of gas products captured during the operation of the energy from waste plant and delivers results in less than four hours from sample collection. This rapid testing enables the company to operate its plant more efficiently, reliably, and more importantly provides assurance of the quality of the waste material.

Karen Campbell, Laboratory Manager, says, “Our ISO 17025 accreditation is the most important standard for testing and/or calibration laboratories such as ours. It confirms that a particular laboratory can produce precise and accurate test results and calibration data. This includes traceability of measurements and calibrations to National Standards.”

“By partnering with local businesses here in Scotland, and offering them world class analytical capabilities, together we are partnering to empower Sustainability in practice – supporting the creation of new jobs in the “green economy” and contributing towards boosting the productivity of local farmers thanks to bio-degradable agricultural supplements that promote soil health and through a circular economy system contributing positively to life on land.”

Overall INEOS Grangemouth is an important partner to other businesses throughout Scotland and the UK, as well as to the Scottish and UK governments and their ambitions to deliver a more sustainable future. We recognise that we have an important part to play in achieving positive impact at the national and international level.

We are strongly focusing on our own sitewide Sustainability initiatives, and this will be clear in our Net Zero roadmap and these ambitious plans and the senior leadership commitment to make them happen will be published later this year.
