Essential building blocks

Ethylene and propylene are used in much more than just plastic. They have wide applications as an intermediary in the manufacture of other chemicals. For example: MEG - is an ethylene derivative used in the production of polyester resins, films and fibres, and for making water-based adhesives, paper, antifreeze, coolant, aircraft de-icers and solvents. The end uses include clothing, textiles, packaging, kitchenware, upholstery, carpets and drink and food containers. Surfactants production - these represent a host of chemical compounds that are used as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents and dispersants. Ethanol, used as a solvent including in the pharmaceutical industry. Ethylene is also used in the production of highly sophisticated synthetic lubricants which are used in the automotive sector as well as wind turbines, to reduce fuel consumption in cars or making it possible for wind turbines to operate effectively.

Propylene main use is polypropylene which is increasingly used in components to make cars lighter and more efficient. In the automotive sector, PP and its alloys have become the polymer of choice accounting for over a third of plastics used in automobiles. It is also used to produce acrylonitrile without which there would be no carbon fibre, which is increasingly important for transport or acrylic fibres for clothing. Propylene oxide which is also based on propylene is used in insulation foams for construction as well as fibreglass, bathrooms - even pleasure boats.
