Late in the afternoon on November 1, 2010 INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA’s Chocolate Bayou Complex suffered a disruption in its instrument air systems believed to be caused by a lightning strike. The incident resulted in a complete site shutdown.

Emergency response plans were initiated and circumstances brought quickly under control. While some flaring did occur, the incident involved no injuries, minimal releases, and no imminent danger to the surrounding community. Emergency response teams are in stand-down and the Chocolate Bayou Complex is now focusing on recovery and restart.

INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA has declared Force Majeure and is investigating the extent of damage to the site and its ability to fulfill existing supply obligations. INEOS is committed to safe and expedient reestablishment of production, though a timetable for restart of production units has not yet been established.
