Rafnes is a large industrial area comprising several INEOS plants. The site is home to INEOS Inovyn’s Chlorine/VCM plants, INEOS O&P’s cracking plant and the INEOS Bamble polyethylene plant. It is also the location of INEOS Beredskap, the shared fire and rescue organisation.

In 1974, the decision was made to build a large, new petrochemical complex in Grenland, in the Telemark region, at Rafnes. At the time, it was the largest industrial project on the Norwegian mainland. Production at the Chlorine/VCM plants began in 1978. These INEOS companies in the Grenland area together employ around 700 people.

VCM is supplied to the PVC plant in the Herøya industrial area via a pipeline under the Frierfjord. VCM is also shipped by vessel to our plants in Stenungsund and Newton Aycliffe, enabling us to maintain a high delivery capacity of PVC to European and global markets. Caustic soda is produced at our chlorine plant in Rafnes and sold to customers in Norway and abroad. The main application of caustic soda is in paper and pulp production. It is also used for pH regulation in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.

The facility has management systems certified to ISO 9001 for Quality, ISO 14001 for Environment and ISO 50001 for Energy.
