About Us

INEOS Shale is a part of INEOS Upstream, our oil and gas exploration and production business.

INEOS Shale is represented in this section of the website. It is the biggest player in the UK onshore shale gas sector with access to over one million acres of the prime shale exploration areas in England and Scotland. The majority of the licenses are located in the old mining heartlands of the Midland Valley of Scotland, the North West, and the East Midlands and also in North Yorkshire and, all with a heritage of energy and feedstock production.

“There is incredible potential to provide the UK with greater energy security, growth and jobs, and help the UK’s chemical and energy-intensive UK manufacturing industry to succeed, worldwide” Tom Pickering, COO, INEOS Shale.

INEOS is one of the UKs largest manufacturing businesses. It employs 4000 people in the UK across 7 sites. It can use shale gas at its manufacturing sites as a raw material for manufacturing chemicals or as an energy source. The company also owns land, pipelines and storage in some of the key areas being explored in the UK.  All that, coupled with INEOS’ clear manufacturing excellence, strong safety focus and good relationships with the communities in which it operates, means that INEOS Shale brings something unique to this emerging industry.

Jim Ratcliffe, INEOS Chairman, “At INEOS, we believe shale gas could revolutionise UK manufacturing and we have the resources to make it happen, the skills to extract the gas safely and the vision to realise that communities must share in the rewards for it to be successfully developed.”

INEOS in the UK

In the UK INEOS employs 4,000 people across 7 sites including our chlorine plant in Runcorn and our petrochemicals plants in Teesside and Grangemouth.

UK Energy Intensive industry needs secure supplies of competitively priced energy to survive and prosper in international markets. Similarly, the UK petrochemicals sector requires secure and competitively priced feedstocks. If these cannot be found in the UK, both sectors face decline. The development of shale gas reserves in the UK presents a unique opportunity to address these key competitiveness issues, and with the existing gas and feedstock infrastructure, the prospects for manufacturing to grow, to secure skilled jobs across the UK would be significantly enhanced.

For many years the UK has had access to supplies of natural gas from the North Sea which has provided competitively priced energy. As conventional reserves have declined, the UK has increasingly depended upon imports with ever-greater volumes of gas being sourced from overseas.

In sharp contrast to the situation in the UK, the USA has seen energy and feedstock prices fall. Its petrochemicals industry, and manufacturing in general, is experiencing a renaissance. In addition its CO2 emissions have fallen sharply as gas-fired generators replace coal in the US power market.  All this is a result of the development of shale gas resources.
