Antwerp Lillo (West)
INEOS O&P Europe's manufacturing plant at Lillo in Belgium is located on a 45-hectare site in the Port of Antwerp, 23 kilometres north of the city centre. The site started up by Solvay in 1970. Polymers production began in 1992 with the manufacture of polypropylene and high-density polyethylene.
The polypropylene unit at Lillo is dedicated to the production of speciality PP materials; particularly heat-seal resins for which INEOS is a world leader. The PP unit is based on unipol technology and has a capacity of 110 ktons/year. The product mix continues to evolve into more specialised products with increased capacity. The HDPE plant in Lillo has a total capacity of 560 ktons/year on two production lines. Product applications include pressure pipe, automotive fuel tanks and blow moulding. With about 200 people on the site, INEOS O&P Europe applies the highest standards for health, safety and the environment.
The Lillo site produces a range of Bio-Attributed Olefins and Polyolefins, based on renewable bio based raw materials that do not compete with food production, for INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe. Each step in the supply chain has been fully certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to track the renewable materials and ensure their sustainability. The final product carries an attribution according to the displacement of fossil fuel-derived raw materials. Project ONE: a game-changer for the European chemical industry
The chemical industry is a cornerstone of the European economy. However, the industry has experienced a set-back in the last couple of decades due to competition with China and the US. In recent years, new chemical plants have been built primarily in the US, China and other parts of Asia, taking advantage of local, competitively priced raw materials and growing economies and demand. The youngest ethylene installation (steam cracker) in Europe is now more than 25 years old.
Project ONE will help reverse this decline and make Europe a pioneer again. This multi-billion project is the largest investment in European chemistry in more than 20 years.
Its installations will produce ethylene and propylene, the building blocks for essential chemical products that are part of everyday life. Ethylene and propylene are used for numerous high-quality products in the automotive, construction, energy and medical sectors (among others). For example, pipes for transporting drinking water and gas, insulation materials, textiles, solar panels, wind turbine lubricants and blades, food hygiene, medical applications and lightweight car components. Ordinarily INEOS would import these raw materials from various parts of the world. Project ONE allows it to move up the value chain, bring the production of these essential products under its own management on the world’s latest technology.
Project ONE will set the standard for the chemical sector in Europe by using the most advanced techniques. In particular, the investment will be groundbreaking in terms of energy efficiency and will have an environmental footprint that is half the size of the best-performing olefin plants in Europe.
