INEOS Oligomers’ Feluy plant, located just south of Brussels in Belgium, is the largest Western European producer of linear alpha olefins (LAO). Its first operation unit was built by Ethyl Corporation in 1976. In 1991, the PAO unit started its 35,000 tons production, followed one year later by the LAO unit producing 200,000 tons.
The INEOS site at Feluy is an important supplier of raw materials in the chemical industry and the largest Polyalphaolefin manufacturing operation in the world. The site has been continuously expanded. In 2000, the LAO production capacity was increased to 300,000 tons, and the PAO production capacity was increased to 70,000 tons and further expanded following years to 85,000 tons. In 2009, a new PAO production line started to bring site Polyalphaolefin capacity to 125,000 tons. Since 16 December 2005, the site has been a part of INEOS Group operated within the Oligomers Business. The site takes Ethylene by pipeline from the Antwerp area and produces Linear Alpha Olefins and Polyalphaolefins. Both of these products are used widely in the industry to produce high performance lubricating oils, plastics, oil field products, detergents and other numerous products. The Feluy site subscribed to the principles of “Responsible Care” in the early 90s and, with some neighboring companies founded the “Safety and Environment Commission of the Feluy industrial area”. This Commission also includes representatives of local communities, local and regional authorities, associations of environment defense & protection. Its aim is to promote dialogue, exchanging constructive ideas and ways to protect environment and prevent risks. The site is also part of Essenscia, the Belgian Chemical Federation which completely endorses the « Business Charter for Sustainable Development » from the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce). The plant has certified quality and environmental management systems according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
