  • Pipes

    Nowadays in Europe, drinking water and gas networks are mainly made of polyethylene. Main types of polyethylene used are the so-called PE80 and PE100 grades classified according to EN and ISO standards for transport of drinking water and gas under pressure.

    More recently, new challenges are appearing in this market. New installation techniques are used, and engineering, as well as gas and water companies, are increasing their requirements. INEOS O&P Europe eases the market pressure on their customers by proposing new materials with outstanding properties such as low sagging during extrusion or stress-cracking resistance to meet these new needs.

    Historical developments of PE pipe materials

    A new family of materials was developed in the UK and Europe in the late 1960s. Its development came in response to the gas distribution industry's requirement for improved resistance to slow crack growth, and flexibility to facilitate installation compared with some of the HDPE materials. These compounds using a base polymer of density between that of LDPE and HDPE are termed MDPE. Their introduction also heralded the use of colour pigments to aid identification of the pipeline, at the request of utility providers, such as British Gas, which required yellow pigmented products. In the early 1980s the blue pigmented MDPE material for potable water systems was developed for the UK water industry by BP Chemicals. Compared to traditional HDPEs available at that time, the MDPEs were considerably more tolerant of site abuse, allowing the development of a range of "No Dig" techniques to allow rapid installation of long lengths of pipes, and for insertion of PE liners for renovation of corroded iron and steel pipelines. The outstanding reliability of this type of material has contributed to the success and growth of the use of polyethylene for distribution systems for both the gas and water utilities.

    In the 20 years following the early 1970s, a true revolution occurred in the use of plastics pipelines systems by the utilities - created by the properties of polyethylene pipe products that had become available. PE became the material of choice for low pressure gas and water service pipelines. However, for gas and some larger diameter water applications, the allowable operating pressure was limited by the need to eliminate any risk of rapid crack propagation (RCP), a design philosophy proven in practice.

    In the early 1990s, a new type of HDPE material was introduced in Europe, having a higher hoop strength but also with a much higher tolerance to RCP, whilst maintaining the excellent resistance to slow crack growth offered by the MDPE materials. Effectively, these materials are termed "3rd generation HDPE", and sometimes referred to as bimodal as a result of the two-stage polymerisation process used to produce them. Not only have these materials removed the risk of RCP, allowing gas applications up to 10 bar and water up to 16 bar in SDR 11 pipe, but they have made PE more competitive against other materials by allowing wall thinning for lower pressure rated pipe. 

    At the same time, a material classification system for plastics pipes was developed in ISO standardization committees, resulting in the publication of ISO 12162 in 1996, Ref.1. This allowed the PE 80 and PE 100 classifications, based on long-term hydrostatic strength, to become established, replacing references to density that had become confusing. The 2nd generation HDPE and MDPE materials fall into the PE 80 class and the bimodal 3rd generation HDPEs are generally PE 100. The original early "First generation" LDPE products are PE 32 (later ones PE 40) and "First generation" HDPE are PE 63. The introduction of PE 100 was a major step forward, and going beyond PE 100 with similar practical processing, welding and pipe installation properties seems less likely. However PE 100 materials continue to improve as the market now has new requirements. PE 100 with specific properties such as low sagging properties allow very large diameter and heavy wall pipe production. Also, resins with impressive resistance to stress crack propagation, called “Superstress” resins, have been developed for use in sandless bedding applications or relining.

  • Pipes - Choice of materials

    Polyethylene is a whole family of materials, often categorized in terms of density. The application of PE in the pipe industry has resulted in a variety of materials being used which are low, medium, high density or even linear low density, abbreviated as LDPE, MDPE, HDPE, and LLDPE.

    A performance-based classification and designation system was introduced in the mid-1990s for pipe, resulting in the publication of ISO 12162 (See Material Classification). A material is given a designation number based on the predicted long-term hydrostatic strength at 50 years and 20 °C, e.g. PE 80 or PE 100.

    For pressure applications, the choice is usually between a PE 80 or PE 100 compound. PE 40 and lower class LDPE materials have diminished in use for pressure pipe but are used for small diameter irrigation applications. The first generation HDPE materials would fall into the PE 50 or PE 63 class, but would only be used for non-pressure or ducting applications nowadays. These have been long superseded by superior performance second generation PE 80 and third generation PE 100 materials.

    There is a choice of PE 80 compounds which can create some confusion. There are unimodal HDPE and MDPE materials meeting the PE 80 classification. However, generally such HDPE material types can barely meet the requirements of current PE pipe product specifications, and are being phased out by most suppliers.

    The unimodal MDPE PE 80 materials offer excellent performance, but might be considered second choice to PE 100 nowadays and limited to service pipe. Some gas companies prefer to continue using these materials for their low pressure systems for historical reasons and because of the pipe's installation flexibility. Following development of the bimodal PE 100 materials, not surprisingly most suppliers have used the same process to produce bimodal PE 80 materials. Although these offer notably improved RCP resistance over unimodal PE 80 materials, such materials have not really found their place in the market. PE 100 materials are the economic choice for large diameter pipes and the performance of unimodal MDPE PE 80 materials is adequate for smaller diameter service pipes.

    Clearly, PE 100 has the advantage of a higher design stress allowing operation at higher pressures or even wall thinning, and the products have greater fracture resistance for large diameter pipe. PE 80 MDPE has more flexibility for ease of installation but this is not a significant advantage. PE 100 materials are suitable for all applications, even including service pipes provided the extra stiffness is taken into account when handling coils during installation.

  • PE-X Crosslinked Polyethylene

    The hot and cold water market is turning increasingly to plastics solutions. Crosslinked polyethylene materials have been in use for around 30 years primarily in wire and cable application and for hot and cold water pipes in competition with copper. These materials are increasingly frequently used and tend to replace traditional materials such as copper or galvanized steel for plumbing, radiator connection or other applications to transport hot and cold water inside buildings.

    There are three main types of crosslinked Polyethylene (PE-X) : PE-Xa - peroxide, PE-Xb - silane, and PE-Xc radiation crosslinked. The most commonly used process is the PE-Xb silane process with pipe crosslinked after extrusion by exposure to moisture. The pipe is crosslinked by immersion in hot water, normally in the factory, but it can be left to crosslink naturally even during initial service. These three types of PE-X are equivalent in term of properties and follow all the same classifications in the ISO 10508 standard.

  • Car Fuel Tank (CFT)

  • Rotomoulding

    The rotomoulding processing technique is quite versatile, cost-efficient and suitable for small-to-medium-size production series. The rotomoulded part volume can vary between 0.1 to 50000 litres.

  • Metallocene

    Eltex® PF materials are at the forefront of metallocene LLDPE production for film applications. They offer leading extrusion performance combined with enhanced end product properties. Extruder output can be increased or energy consumption decreased by as much as 20%.

    This performance, together with exceptionally high impact resistance (>1000 g/25µm dart drop) and improved sealing and optical properties, allows INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe to offer a very distinctive set of behaviours for Eltex® PF products.

    Eltex® PF materials are made using a very clean manufacturing process (proprietary Innovene gas phase process) and this, together with the potential to significantly downgauge films and reduce packaging weight, ensures that the whole value chain is greener.

  • LDPE for Film Application

    The LDPE grade range from INEOS Olefins & Polymers varies from standard homopolymers to EBA (Ethylene Butyl Acrylate) copolymers and ionomers. These materials are used in a wide selection of applications, including:

    • Stretch hoods
    • Collation shrinkwrap
    • Lamination film
    • Consumer packaging

    LDPE is made in Cologne, Germany and Bamble, Norway using autoclave technology. These materials (particularly the low melt index grades) show better toughness, higher sealing strength and range, and better holing resistance in shrink film than similar LDPE grades from tubular plants.

    The EBA copolymers made in Bamble are used in several technically demanding end applications, and are particularly suitable for stretch hoods, offering higher elasticity than other copolymers.

  • LLDPE for Film Application

    INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe manufactures C6-LLDPE products, using proprietary Innovene gas phase process. 

    The C6-LLDPE products are high performance materials that offer superior film properties for highly demanding applications such as pre-stretched cast film, heavy duty sacks, high quality lamination film and thin gauge consumer packaging.

  • Advanced Industrial Packaging

    INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe’s advanced industrial packaging sector supplies advantaged polyolefins for use in the production of injection and blow moulded articles with sizes ranging from less than 10 ml to more than 10,000 L. These containers and bottles are typically supplied to the industrial packaging and transportation markets.

    High density polyethylene

    INEOS O&P Europe operates state of the art proprietary production facilities using a range of catalyst systems to produce leading grades specifically tailored for all end used applications:

    • Narrow molecular weight homopolymer and copolymer grades for injection moulding of industrial containers for handling applications
    • Medium molecular weight homopolymer and copolymer grades with excellent stiffness / environmental stress crack resistance balances to meet the most demanding blow moulded end user applications

  • Compounding

    INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe’s first priority is serving customers and developing the necessary products for their markets. This has led to the development of both powder and pellet grades specifically tailored for the compounding market. These tailored grades are complemented by an extensive range of grades primarily designed for the injection moulding, blow moulding and extrusion markets.


    Should you require stiffness, impact or transparency our polypropylene grades will meet your technical requirements. Additionally, a range of homopolymer and copolymer powder grades taken directly from the reactor, branded Eltex® P, are available. Eltex® P powders are not stabilised and have a narrow particle size distribution with an average size of around 600 microns. 

    This narrow particle size distribution coupled with a spherical morphology results in free flowing characteristics and virtually no fines. The uniform size gives excellent mixing behaviour with additives, fillers and colour concentrates.

    High density polyethylene

    Along with a complete range of pellet grades, INEOS O&P Europe also offers an extensive range of powder grades produced on a Ziegler Slurry process using proprietary supported catalyst. These powders, both homopolymer and copolymers have an average particle size of 250 microns making them ideal for numerous applications including the following:

    • Wood Plastic Composites
    • Textile components
    • Masterbatch and compound production
    • Chlorinated or chemically modified polyethylene production

    Low and Linear low density polyethylene

    An extensive range of low density and linear low density polyethylene grades are offered for compound production though these grades are only supplied in pellet form.

Export and Distribution

  • The export, trading and distribution sector is organised to develop regular business partnerships with customers outside European countries, with a focus on CIS, Turkey, the Middle East, Africa and South America.

    The Asian market, from Pakistan to New Zealand, is covered by the INEOS office in Shanghai. The United States and Canada are mainly served by our US office and production plant (INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA, Shanghai Office), with all three offices working in close contact.

    Export business is structured through a network of agents which have extensive experience of the polyolefins products and in depth local market knowledge, together with a dedicated back office team located in Brussels. Trading activity is used to provide options, preferably on export markets, to load the commodity lines to their maximum capacities with optimised sales made on an on the spot basis.
