The polyolefin facilities of INEOS Bamble are located in an industrial area about 160 km south of Oslo and less than an hour’s drive from Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF). The production started in 1977/1978. The Noretyl cracker on site (of approx. 600,000 tons per annum) provides the principal feedstocks of ethylene and propylene to the INEOS system and supplies the LDPE plant via dedicated pipeline.

Ownership has changed over the years; Saga Petrokjemi, Norsk Hydro, Statoil and Borealis until INEOS bought the facilities in September 2007. INEOS ChlorVinyls in Norway is also located here.

The production of LDPE-resins is used in pharma, coating, film, moulding wire & cable applications. 

The site’s SHE-policy’s target is to be a leader in the industry and to work continuously to improve SHE results by giving SHE top priority throughout the organization. Historically the site can document very good SHE-results, both regarding personnel and environment. 

As the site is surrounded by undeveloped areas, there is little exposure to the public. INEOS Bamble keeps an open dialogue with neighbours and the local community administration in the best interest of all parties.

INEOS O&P Europe's Geel Belgium facility is on an industrial site established originally in 1967 by Amoco Chemicals. The 115 hectare site – of which 38 hectares is INEOS property - is shared with BP's Aromatics and Acetyls Group.

The site is located 45 km east of Antwerp and manufactures polypropylene (PP) resins for use in applications including food packaging, pipe applications and injection moulding applications.

As at other INEOS facilities, health, safety and environmental performance are integralcomponents of the Geel operations. The site continuously strives to improve its safety performance. Key elements of the policy are high employee competency standards, strict process safety management systems and regular audits by all levels of the organisation.

The Geel plant meets the world’s strictest requirements for water, air, and noise emissions. By deploying proprietary technologies and maintaining high levels of operational reliability, the Geel site minimises emissions while regularly appearing in the top decile of European plants with regards to energy efficiency. 

The Geel facility works actively with local communities via regular communication sessions with its neighbours and other nearby industries. Outreach to promote and foster understanding with the local citizens includes the Buren (Neighbor) Platform and Overleg (Consult) Commission, where representatives of the local community, local political parties, employees and plant management meet twice a year to build good relations. Additionally, Ineos Geel employees serve as members in local community activities, ranging from youth sports leagues to nature clubs.

The Grangemouth refinery and petrochemicals facility is INEOS’ largest production centre. It is a deeply integrated site exploiting synergies between the refinery and the petrochemicals plants. Located 40 kilometres west of Edinburgh on a 1700-acre site, the petrochemicals facility manufactures over 2 million tonnes of chemicals products per annum and the refinery has an annual capacity of 10 million tonnes. The site is strategically placed to make use of crude oil and natural gas liquids from the North Sea and transforms them into petrol, fuel products and a range of Olefins and polymer products.

At the heart of the petrochemicals site is the KG cracker, which produces the feed materials used by the other chemicals plants. The unit has a total production capacity of 1 million tonnes per year. The KG (Kinneil Gas) unit is a gas cracker using mainly ethane and propane as its raw materials. Grangemouth's ability to crack gas feedstocks has significant commercial advantages.

The Grangemouth Refinery processes around 200,000 barrels per day of crude oil, producing more than 9 million tonnes of fuels per year. The refinery’s oil feedstock is mainly supplied by the neighbouring INEOS-operated Kinneil oil and gas processing plant, with an increasing proportion imported to the site via pipeline from the Finnart Ocean Terminal located 90 kilometres west of Grangemouth.

The Koeln Site, re-branded in December 2005 as INEOS Koeln GmbH, was founded back in 1957 as a joint venture between the British oil giant BP and the German chemical and pharmaceutical company, Bayer. The site today employs approximately 2000 people. It manufactures a.o. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and the metallocene Linear Low Density Polyethylene (mLLDPE).

Its main feedstock is Naphtha which feeds two ethylene production units (crackers) of 1.3 million tons per annum total capacity delivered to the site by barges on the Rhine River or by pipelines. The site consists of 18 different plants which are set up in seven so-called assets and is connected to three major feedstock and product pipelines. It produces more than 4 million tes of products per annum, of which 85% were sold in Germany and the BENELUX Countries to nearly 900 customers. 70% of these customers have their companies located in a 200 km “Circle” around the site. This means that the Site is extremely well located with regard to feedstock supplies and transport of goods to customers.

The story of the site starts in the 1930s with the start up of a BP refinery, then reinforced by the development of the petrochemical site in the 50s to which the refinery is strongly linked. The polyethylene plant started up in 1985 with a 100 kt production capacity increased at 250 kt in 2001. The polypropylene plant was put on stream in 1987. Since December 2005, all BP units have been acquired by INEOS. 

INEOS O&P Europe's Lavéra site is located 30 miles west of Marseille, in the south of France. The site occupies 650 hectares of land on the Mediterranean coast and is one of the largest petrochemicals sites in Europe. The chemicals operations share the site with the INEOS refinery, which is the second largest refinery in France.

The Lavéra site operates a variety of chemicals units to deliver over two million tons of chemical products each year. Naphtachimie, a 50:50 joint venture with Total, produces olefins (ethylene, propylene, butadiene) plus benzene, and with Oxochimie produces oxoalcohols (n-butanol, iso-butanol, and 2-ethyl hexanol). On site, polymers products include polyethylene and polypropylene as well as high performance chemicals such as ethylene oxide, glycol ethers, ethanol amines, acetates and ethylene glycol Indopol polybutene.

The Lavéra site also includes a Technology Center employing more than 100 people. It is a centre of excellence for polymers and for the development of technology such as the gas phase polymerisation process. As at other sites throughout INEOS, health, safety and environmental responsibilities are emphasised. The site earned ISO 14001 accreditation in October 1998 and ISO 9001, 5 years earlier.

The site's long term presence has resulted in close and privileged relationships with the local community. The Lavéra plant supports many local initiatives devoted to education and information of the community on the role and impact of Industry.

INEOS O&P Europe's’manufacturing plant at Lillo in Belgium is located on a 45-hectare site in the port of Antwerp, 23 kilometres north of the city centre. Polymers production began in 1992 with the manufacture of polypropylene and high-density polyethylene.

The polypropylene unit at Lillo is dedicated to the production of speciality PP materials; particularly heat-seal resins for which INEOS is a world leader. The product mix continues to evolve into more sophisticated products with increased capacity.

The HDPE plant in Lillo has a total capacity of 440,000 tons per year on two production lines. Product applications include pressure pipe, automotive fuel tanks and blow moulding.

With about 170 people on the site, INEOS O&P Europe applies the highest standards for health, safety and the environment.

NOH Technology Centre

INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe runs a major Technology Centre, hosted in Solvay’s Research and Technology Park. This is located in “Neder-Over-Hembeek” (NoH), in Brussels.

In this Technology Centre, more than 100 employees work on Research, Development and Technical Service, dedicated to Polyolefins. More than half are highly educated engineers and Ph.Ds., coming from a wealth of different countries, cultures and industrial heritages.

The Technology Centre focuses on designing the molecular architecture that will provide our customers with the polymers exhibiting the right combination of end-use properties.

This means that, from catalyst evaluation to end-use properties evaluation, all the steps of product development (bench scale polymerization, testing, processing, structure-properties science, additivation, product stewardship etc) are managed in “NOH”.

The Technology developments directed from NOH are also supported by the pilot plants in Italy (Rosignano), France (Lavera) and USA (Naperville), covering a unique range of catalysts and processes for our three polyolefins families (PP, linear polyethylenes (HD, LL) and ramified polyethylenes (LD).

The Rosignano plant was founded in 1912 and started as a chemical production site (ash).  The polyethylene plant was built in 1959.

The HDPE manufacturing plant and the pilot plant for polyethylene and polypropylene are located in Tuscany, close to the sea - about 50 kilometres from Pisa. 

The HDPE manufacturing plant has a capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year with four production lines that are optimised for producing 100 percent of specialities. The HDPE manufacturing plant is ISO 9000 certified.

The pilot plant also has four lines, which can produce different experimental products (PE or PP) in different operating conditions.

In Rosignano, employees work to maintain the highest health, safety and environment standards. Both the manufacturing and pilot plants are environmental ISO 14000 certified. In December 2004 Rosignano attained one million hours worked with zero days away from work.

INEOS O&P Europe's Sarralbe France facility is a stand-alone site established by Solvay. After one hundred years of soda-ash production, Polyolefins activity started in 1970.

The site, located in the North-East of France close to Germany, manufactures high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) resins. Applications include food packaging, pipe applications, film, extrusion and injection moulding.

Health, safety and environmental performance are integral components of the Sarralbe operations. Everyone on site is responsible for his own and others’ safety. Continuous improvement of safety is pursued by mature personnel risk awareness, process safety management systems, and regular audits by all levels of the organisation.

Sarralbe is a SEVESO Level 2 site with strict legal requirements on safety and security. It also implies a high level of operational reliability. The Sarralbe site is ISO 9001/14001 certified.

Relationships with local surrounding communities are managed by an extensive and open communication policy. A CLIC (Comité Local d’Information et de Concertation) meets regularly to inform local authorities and neighbours on the potential risks and the measures taken to prevent major events. The industrial site is fully integrated within the Sarralbe town and participates actively in its economic development.
