Ethylene Oxide and EO Glycols
INEOS Oxide is the European leader in the production of both Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Glycol. Our EO capacity is spread across three different European production sites in Antwerp, Cologne and Lavera. Ethylene oxide (EO) is an important building block for a wide variety of derivative products, which are used in the production of detergents, thickeners, solvents, plastics. EO is consumed internally by INEOS Oxide in the production of intermediates such as glycols, ethanolamines, glycol ethers and ethoxylates.
Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is a basic building block used for applications that require chemical intermediates for resins, solvent couplers, freezing point depression solvents and humectants and chemical intermediates, such as automotive antifreeze and coolants, resins, water-based adhesives, latex paints and asphalt emulsions, electrolytic capacitors, textile fibres, paper and leather.
Diethylene glycol (DEG) is used in applications that require hygroscopicity and low volatility. These applications include products such as thermoplastic polyurethanes, emulsifiers, plasticizers, glass- and cement-grinding aids, furniture and shoe polishes and printing ink.
Triethylene glycol (TEG) is often used as a desiccant in gas extraction and treatment or as a cement grinding aid. It is also an important raw material in the manufacturing of polyester resins and plasticizers in particular for the production of membranes for laminated glass. Other applications include coolants, heat transfer fluids and antifreeze.
Propylene Oxide and Glycols
Propylene Oxide (PO) is an important building block for the preparation of a wide variety of PO derivatives. A major part of the propylene oxide produced by INEOS Oxide is consumed internally to produce propylene glycols. INEOS Oxide produces propylene oxide and propylene glycols in Cologne, Germany with a high degree of integration into a larger petrochemical site. PO is primarily used as a chemical intermediate for the production of derivatives such as propylene glycols, acrylates, UV curing resins, isopropanolamines and in the production of polyether polyols and other alkoxylates. INEOS Oxide’s propylene glycol unit in Cologne produces mono-, di- and tri-propylene glycols as well as smaller quantities of higher glycols. PO glycols can be found in a wide range of applications ranging from de-icing formulations to paints, inks and pharmaceuticals.
Monopropylene glycol (MPG) industrial grade is a high-purity material, having a wide range of practical applications. PGI is a colorless, water soluble, medium viscosity, hygroscopic liquid with a low vapour pressure and low toxicity. It is widely employed as a solvent, heat transfer medium or chemical intermediate in numerous industries. Monopropylene Glycol EP/USP, referring to the European and USA Pharmacopoeias, is a high-purity grade of monopropylene glycol for use in pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, personal care, flavour and fragrance, plus a variety of other applications. PG USP/EP is Kosher certified and complies with Halal requirements.
Dipropylene glycol (DPG), regular Grade, is a co-product from the manufacture of monopropylene glycol, involving the high temperature and high pressure hydrolysis of propylene oxide (PO) with excess water. It is used as a building block and solvent in a variety of products, in particular in the production of plasticizers, acrylates, UPR resins, DCPD resins and polyurethanes. DPG is also used a solvent in brake fluids, insecticides, lubricants, agricultural and coatings formulations.
Dipropylene glycol F (DPG F) is a high-purity product, designed for use in odour-sensitive applications, such as fragrances and cosmetics. The material, a high purity distilled product, is a liquid that is colourless, water-soluble, hygroscopic and nearly odourless. This grade of DPG was developed to meet the needs of manufacturers who require consistent high quality for their fragrances and personal care products.
Tripropylene glycol (TPG) is a versatile chemical intermediate and solvent used in a wide variety of industrial applications. TPG characteristics include broad solvency power, water solubility, low volatility and high boiling point. It can be used as building block for polyurethanes and acrylate resins for UV curing applications.
Ethanolamines
INEOS Oxide is a world leader in the manufacture of ethanolamines. Our global manufacturing facilities are located in Plaquemine (USA) on the Louisiana Gulf Coast and in Lavera (France) on the Mediterranean coast. The ethanolamine product range includes mono-, di- and triethanolamine. A mixture of higher ethanolamines and low freezing grades is also on offer along with ethanolamines derivatives such as diethanol isopropanolamine (DEIPA). Ethanolamines are one of the most versatile members of the EO derivatives family. They are bifunctional molecules containing both amine and alcohol functional groups and are therefore capable of undergoing reactions at both groups. Many of their various industrial applications rely on these features.
Monoethanolamine (MEA) offers a broad spectrum of application opportunities, namely in surfactants, personal care products, textile finishing and wood treating. Other applications include use in oil well chemicals and in metalworking to prevent corrosion, and as catalysts that promote stability during the reaction process in the manufacture of flexible and rigid urethane foams.
Because MEA combines the properties of amines and alcohols, MEA exhibits the unique capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups. INEOs commercializes MEA as a pure grade and in Low Freezing Grades (LFG).
Diethanolamine (DEA) is commonly used as building block in the preparation of salts and amides to be used in soaps, surfactants for liquid laundry and dishwashing detergents, cosmetics, shampoos, and hair conditioners. DEA is also extensively used in industrial gas purification, anticorrosion agent in metalworking fluids and in manufacturing of herbicides (Glyphosate) and cement additives.
Triethanolamine (TEA) can be used in a variety of applications, namely in detergents, personal care products and textile finishing. Other applications include concrete additives and adhesive, rubber, agricultural and photographic chemicals.
Diethanol isopropanolamine (DEIPA) is used primarily as cement grinding aid. DEIPA is an alkanolamine used in solid admixtures and concrete. It enhances the quality of cement at all hydration ages and concrete mixed with slag and fly fiery remains will in general demonstrate a more prominent reaction to chemicals.

E-/P-Series Glycol Ethers
INEOS Oxide produces a wide range of E- and P- Series glycol ethers. Our glycol ethers include methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and butyl product groups. For some of these glycol ethers we also produce the corresponding acetate esters. The production of these low molecular weight EO and PO derivatives is performed on INEOS Oxide’s glycol ether units in Antwerp and Lavera.
E-Series Glycol ethers exhibit high water solubility/compatibility. They can be used in water-based applications acting as booster solvents or as coalescent in paint, coatings, inks and cleaning formulations. These products can in addition be used in fuel jet additive, brake fluids, vitamin production processes and others.
Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (BGE) is a fast-evaporating product with an excellent balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic character, excellent active solvency and coupling properties. It provides excellent performance in coatings, cleaners, and many other types of products.
Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (BDGE) is a slow-evaporating, hydrophilic glycol ether with excellent coalescing and coupling power. It is mainly used in coatings, industrial and household cleaning products and textile dyeing.
P-series glycol ethers combine good solvency, low surface tension and low toxicity. They are high-performance industrial solvents commonly used in paint, coating, inks, cleaners. In addition, they can be used in agricultural, cosmetic, textile and adhesives products.
Ethoxy propanol (EP) is a high flash point, water miscible, colourless solvent providing slow evaporation rates and good viscosity control for a broad range of polymers, resins and coatings. It is completely water miscible over a wide range of temperatures making it a very good coupling solvent for resin/water systems. It is commonly used in resins, inks and adhesives.
Propylene Glycol n-Butyl Ether (PnB) is a product with high solvency, oil solubility, surfactant, and coupling properties and due to good evaporation rate control, high formulating flexibility, low viscosity, as well as low toxicity, may be used as a coupling agent and solvent in domestic and commercial cleaning solutions such as degreasers, paint removers, metal cleaners, and hard surface cleaners. These characteristics also allow PnB to be used as a coupling agent in water-based agricultural formulations, facilitating the homogenous blending of ingredients with diverse solubility characteristics. PnB is also used as a coalescent for lowering minimum film formulation temperature (MFFT) in water-borne latex coatings and as a chemical intermediate for the production of epoxides, acid ester derivatives, solvents, and plasticizers.
Dipropylene Glycol n-Butyl Ether (DPnB) has many performance characteristics that are similar to PnB but with lower volatility and higher viscosity. Uses for DPnB include: coupling agent for cleaners such as degreasers, paint removers, metal cleaners, and hard surface cleaners; coalescent for lowering MFFT in latex coatings; solvent for water-reducible coatings; chemical intermediate for production of epoxides, acid ester derivatives, solvents, and plasticizers.
