PTAir

About PTAir

By finding ways to reduce the carbon associated with some of the main products that we make, we are in our own operations while helping our customers meet their carbon goals for the products and services they provide.

The petrochemicals that we produce are used in many aspects of day-to-day life -- from pharmaceuticals and lightweight automotive components to high-tech sportswear.

In support of our wider sustainability agenda, we launched a new low carbon PTA2: PTAir in 2016, offering our customers in the polyester value chain the opportunity to purchase a lower carbon feedstock. A feature of PTAir is its use of proprietary PX and PTA technology which supports a 29% lower global warming potential than the average European PTA production3 which has been independently assured. INEOS customers can also go further in advancing their low carbon objectives by accessing the additional benefits of PTAir Neutral and PTAir Neutral Products.

ASSURANCE STATEMENT

[1] PTAir is a trade mark of INEOS Aromatics
[2] based on an independent cradle-to-gate Eco-profile by IFEU reviewed by ERM Certification and Verification Services (ERM CVS). The study conducted by IFEU uses Plastics Europe Methodology to compare the environmental impact of 1 Kg of BP Geel PTA manufactured with BP integrated PX (integrated production) to PTA produced in Europe as published in the Environmental Product Declaration of the PET Manufacturers in Europe February 2016. The study is in accordance to ISO 14040–44 requirements. Data for both studies are based on 2013. Mass balance approach based on the proportion of integrated PX versus total consumption.

[3] This figure is compared to the Global Warming Potential (100 years) per 1 kg PTA as published in the Environmental Product Declaration of the PET Manufacturers in Europe February 2016. PTA produced by bp Aromatics NV in Geel is included in the European study average and represents ~30% of the total installed production capacity in Europe in the input.

PTAir Neutral

We have also launched PTAir Neutral, the world’s first certified carbon neutral PTA.6 PTAir Neutral offers customers the opportunity to purchase a carbon neutral product with net zero carbon emissions. is accomplished through collaboration with organisations, that invest in various carbon emission reduction projects located around the world. These programs provide economic, social and environmental benefits to the communities they serve.

PTAir Neutral products

Our customers also have the opportunity to offset their entire product carbon footprint – over and above their PTA use – to achieve full carbon neutrality across their product portfolio.

PTAir is available in Europe, the United States and China today.

[4] Carbon neutrality of PTAir Neutral achieved by bp Aromatics Limited NV, bp Zhuhai Chemical Company Ltd., and bp Aromatics Ltd. PTAir is certified to the PAS 2060 standard for defined periods and assured by DEKRA Assurance Services GmbH.

PT Air Carbon Calculator

Take advantage of the INEOS PTAir Carbon Calculator

The PTAir Carbon Calculator is designed to help PTAir customers along the value chain calculate the carbon footprint of their products when manufactured using PTAir or PTAir Neutral and to facilitate the full neutralisation of the final product, be that a bottle, food tray, fibres or specialties.

About the calculator

The Calculator uses a methodology compliant with ISO standards, and has been reviewed and assured by IFEU – Institute for Energy and DEKRA. From the data provided, the Carbon Calculator will calculate:

  • Overall greenhouse gas emissions (in kg CO2-eq) connected to the production of the specified product (1)
  • The carbon footprint per unit produced (in kg CO2-eq/kg product)
  • Amount of incremental carbon reduction realized from the use of INEOS PTAir™ low carbon and INEOS PTAir™ Neutral products compared to using industry average feedstock only.

PET producers who manufacture their product with PTAir can also take advantage of code-sharing functionality to share their GWP values with their customers further down the value chain who also want to calculate their GWP.

The Calculator is not suitable for products manufactured from other forms of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) or for any other products.
