Safety, Health and Environment

INEOS takes its responsibility for the environment very seriously and is fully committed to delivering a record of responsible environmental performance across all its operations.

Safety, Health & Environment

We continually strive to meet and exceed strict safety, health and environmental performance targets and are committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations. Excellence in safety, health and environmental performance is our top priority and we are open and honest about such performance, which we publish locally and nationally, as required.

INEOS operates to strict regulations that are set by the national environment agencies of the countries in which we operate. We are committed to ensuring that our facilities have as low an impact as possible on local people and the environment and we continue to work in close partnership with community groups and other stakeholders to ensure that we are a responsible neighbour.

Our commitment is to protect the health and safety of our employees, the communities in which we operate and the users of our products.

We aim to meet or exceed all relevant legislative requirements while minimizing the effect of our operations on the environment. We continually strive towards a goal of 'zero injuries' through our positive safety culture and the belief that all accidents are preventable.

We care...

  • About compliance with the law,
  • About developing a workforce of SHE champions

We hold ourselves and one another accountable for SHE performance.

REACH

We have and will actively support the objectives of REACH for Europe and similar legislation/regulations for other non-EU regions.

INEOS is committed to fulfilling its REACH obligations under its commitments to Responsible Care, free trade and in limiting risks of exposure to chemicals for health and the environment. Its businesses have registered with the European Chemicals Agency those substances subject to a REACH registration which are manufactured or imported in quantities exceeding 1 tonne per year.

It continues to work, alone or with co-registrants as required, to ensure that dossiers are maintained up to date and of the required quality and, where relevant, address activities pertaining to dossier evaluation, substance evaluation, restriction and authorisation. Where applicable, INEOS is also developing dossiers for REACH-like registrations in other parts of the world. If you have specific questions regarding REACH for the substance you purchase from INEOS, please contact the specific INEOS business.

The entire INEOS organization, including our operations based in Europe, Asia, the U.S. or other geographies, has actively supported the implementation of REACH as an effective legislation in the spirit of which it was designed – to protect human health and the environment by providing information across the supply chain supporting the safe use of chemicals and chemical substances. We can confirm that all products we place on the EU market are compliant with REACH; substances have been registered by INEOS or INEOS’s suppliers, where applicable.

Additional compliance commitments

K-REACH, Korea’s Act on the Registration and Evaluation of Chemical Substance (AREC), is similar to REACH (applied in Europe), having similar requirements and impact to the future availability of chemicals supplied within Korea. Specific substances require to be pre-registered and registered.

Pre-registration deadline: 30 June 2019
Registration deadline: ultimately by December 31, 2030 with 4 deadlines depending on tonnage band

As a major supplier of chemical substances in Korea, our first priority is to comply with the K-REACH regulation as well as to ensure the supply of goods to our customers is not disrupted. INEOS teams are in place and committed to cooperating with our customers and suppliers to support the successful implementation of K-REACH. This includes coordinating the exchange of information across the supply chain, from suppliers and manufacturers to customers and end users.

To support our customers in Korea, we have appointed INEOS Korea REACH Co., Ltd as our Only Representative. Following this appointment, our OR has filled annual reports and plans to register substances involved. We will establish a relationship with customers importing from INEOS which will relieve them from their registration and reporting obligations as an importer and become a downstream user of INEOS.

KKDİK, the Turkish implementation of REACH (applied in Europe) was published on 23 June 2017. It has similar requirements and impact to the future availability of chemicals supplied within Turkey. Specific substances require to be pre-registered and registered. See respectively deadlines:

Pre-registration: 31 December 2020
Registration:
31.12.2026: ≥ 1,000 tpa≥ 100 tpa for substance with environmental hazards of category 1 and all tonnage bands for CMR category 1A/1B and
31.12.2028: 100-1,000 tpa, and
31.12.2030: 1-10 tpa and 10-100 tpa.

As a major supplier and importer of chemical substances in Turkey, our first priority is to comply with the KKDİK regulation as well as to ensure the supply of goods to our customers is not disrupted. INEOS teams are in place and committed to cooperating with our customers and suppliers to support the successful implementation of KKDİK. This includes coordinating the exchange of information across the supply chain, from suppliers and manufacturers to customers and end users.

To support our customers in Turkey, we have appointed “REACH Global Services” as our Only Representative. Following this appointment, our OR has notified / pre-registered substances involved. When the registration phase starts, we will establish a relationship with customers importing from INEOS which will relieve them from their registration obligations as an importer and become a downstream user of INEOS.

Culture of Safety

It is the responsibility of everyone at INEOS to ensure the highest standards of health and safety in everything that we do. Our commitment to safety starts at the top, with the Executive Board of each INEOS business being responsible for safety performance. All employees and contractors receive extensive safety training, participate in safety teams, contribute to incident learning, and suggest ongoing improvements in safety standards and procedures.

The INEOS safety principles define what is expected of all our employees, contractors and businesses on a day-to-day basis. Each INEOS business is measured on its adherence to the principles and on its performance against specific safety targets. Safety performance is also linked to our employee bonus scheme, which further helps to embed a safety culture.

We focus our attention on safety in both the processes we apply and the behaviour we expect.

Systems and operational procedures have safety built in to ensure the plant and equipment is being operated properly. Any changes in processes or procedures are subject to a risk assessment and, if necessary, a hazard study to analyse any potential safety risks or impacts. We have strict emergency procedures and if required, the plant will be shut down completely until an issue can be fully resolved.

Everyone has responsibility for ensuring a safe working environment for themselves and their co-workers, and speaking up about safety issues is encouraged. This extends to incentivising employees to report near misses. We can learn from these, and put in place corrective action to ensure such incidents are never repeated.

The success of our business depends on ensuring a safe environment for our staff and the wider community around each of our sites, which is why safety is our highest priority.
