Project Greensand
9 years of technical and regulatory innovation
Project Greensand is expected to commence operations during the summer of 2026, marking a major milestone as the first CO₂ storage facility to become operational within the European Union. The transition from demonstration to full-scale operation represents a leap forward in the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) as practical and scalable in Europe.
Project Greensand has also established the first fully integrated CCS value chain in the EU, linking capture, transport and permanent storage of CO₂ at industrial scale. The creation of this value chain has involved years of complex work and innovation to achieve things that have not been done before.
During 2026, the captured CO₂ will be transported from biogas facilities to the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark, where it is received and temporarily stored at the CO₂ terminal developed and operated by INEOS.
From Esbjerg, the CO₂ is shipped offshore using Carbon Destroyer 1, the world’s first dedicated offshore CO₂ carrier, enabling safe and efficient transport to the Greensand storage site in the Danish sector of the North Sea for permanent geological storage.

By giving depleted oil and gas fields a new purpose as permanent CO2 storage sites, we are turning existing assets and expertise into part of the climate solution while maintaining key jobs.
